MARY ANN D’URSO’s features and essays have been published in The Boston Globe, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Record, Newhouse publications, and for Reuters and Gannett news services. With a background in English literature and journalism, Mary Ann is also a photographer and educator. She has won several New Jersey Press Association awards.
In college, Mary Ann cut her teeth writing obituaries for The Record, a daily newspaper in northern New Jersey. Name. Age. Town. Cause of death. Her professional life in journalism had begun and with it, her understanding of the power of story, however brief or final.
Mary Ann went on to work at weekly and daily newspapers, as assistant to the editor at a woman’s magazine in New York, and as Managing Editor of the in-house newspaper at an international law firm. She has also: sold kitchen gadgets at Crate and Barrel; taught literature and writing at high school prep schools; developed curriculum at an alternative school for at-risk women; been a school photographer, and served as the European sales rep for disposable urine thermometers. All the while, she collected stories and images.
